JOANN WOODWARD, BIO/STATEMENT
Growing up in a creative family in Altadena, California, I found many outlets for creative expression. This included sewing, ceramics and cooking. After earning a degree in Art and Home Economics at the University of California Santa Barbara, I worked as a buyer for J W Robinson's. My early exposure to watercolor media began in college with Robert Fenton and continued with James Cooper Wright through adult education. The opportunity to focus on art happened when the family moved to Upland.
I have been painting with the Art Box Studio group in Upland since 1995. Here the atmosphere of creative artists is led by Sylva Megerdichian. She has been a great influence on my painting leading me to be a better shape maker and blender of color. At the Art Box I have studied with Milford Zornes, Angela Hernandez, Judi Betz, Stephen Quiller and Christopher Schink. I love the direct way of laying on color. I continue to strive on bringing brighter colors to my paintings. I favor semi-realism with emphasis on line and shape. I enjoy doing an implied look rather than all spelled out. The use of ink or CARAN d'ACHE on smooth or rough paper sends me in different directions.
My passion in painting subjects runs from floral to scenes from travels. Trips to Italy, France, Mexico and the Sierras have inspired me to use my photos and sketches to develop paintings of landscapes and flowers. Our curious cats become inspiring models.
I have been fortunate to have had paintings featured in the Pasadena Showcase House which led to a show at the John Roberts Floral Shop in La Canada. I have been involved with the Riverside Art Museum's, "Off the Wall" exhibits. I was thrilled when the Museum bought my painting of a Mission for their permanent collection.
It has been an honor to be in juried Art Shows for Chaffey Community Museum of Art, Associated Artists of the Inland Empire, Ontario Museum of History and Art, and the La Habra Art Association. My paintings and cards can be seen at the CCMA Gift Shop in Ontario, California.
