The Lavender Fields: This is a painting looking northwest of the lavender fields at Highland Springs Resort in Cherry Valley. The resort ownership has diversified and operates an organic herb farm. For the past several years they have had a “Lavender Festival” in June and I have attended many times. I also enjoy just walking the grounds looking for interesting scenes to photograph or paint. I displayed this painting at this year’s festival and it met with enthusiastic approval. As you can see from the painting, I like to use a heightened color palette and painted it in an enthusiastic manner using palette knives as the primary tool for applying the paint. |

The Fountain: This is another image taken from the Highland Springs Resort, which is more than one hundred years old. This fountain, which appears rather grand in this painting, is actually quite small, and recently the shrubbery surrounding it was pruned back rather severely. But I was able to capture it when the greenery was growing exuberantly and the light was just right. Again, I have applied color as I saw fit, this is a very expressionistic piece, the actual colors in the scene are pretty drab – dull greens and browns! |

Ocotillo Bloom, Anza Borrego State Park: I really enjoy experiencing Anza Borrego State park in the spring when all the cacti are in bloom and the desert floor is carpeted with wild flowers. This particular ocotillo bloom was somewhat unusual as instead of being at the end of an upright branch, the branch was bowed and curved. I found this intriguing and photographed it from several angles and ended up painting the composition seen here. |
